Hypatia (Women’s Studies)
· Hypatia (hi-pay-sha) was one of the first female intellectual, philosopher, mathematician, and astronomer in Alexandria, Egypt.
· House Bill 999 and Senate Bill 266, signed into law in May 2023, dictate which courses of study college students at Florida’s public colleges and universities could choose to pursue. They proposed prohibiting major or minor fields of study involving race and gender studies, feminist theory, and social justice under the auspices that such studies amount to DEI and “Woke” culture.
· Note: Due to an outcry of students and citizens, the banning of women’s studies, feminist theory, and some versions of gender studies were removed from the bill. (a show of what our voices together can accomplish).
