This is a vivid memory of walking on a glacier in Alaska.  It was bleak but beautiful; expansive but visibly shrinking.  You could see where the ice and snow had receded and yet you could still take your water bottle and fill it up with the icy cold and pure glacier water. Suddenly there was a deep and resonant crack. The snow on the cliff was threatening to slide off and continue its melt.  The quiet solitude was broken.
