Cora Marshall
Sea Dreaming #4
BY WAY OF SPIRIT:
The concept of spirituality has always been an integral part of my life and art. I have always been curious about and felt connected to something beyond the physical world, understanding that the boundary between the two can be thin. This awareness began at an early age, perhaps because my grandfather was an undertaker in southern Virginia, and we would visit every summer for about a month. My grandparents lived above the funeral home where we stayed. When there were no visitors, my sister, brothers, and I would visit the chapel to see who had passed away and often played the organ when no living individuals were present. The cycle of death and life was a significant part of our upbringing. When I was seven years old, my 9-year-old sister passed away. As is typical, my parents turned to the church for understanding and withdrew us from public school to enroll us all in Catholic school. During my undergraduate years, I earned money by reading tarot cards for friends and classmates. As an artist, I often dream my paintings and draw inspiration from the voices of those who have come before me, particularly my sister, mother, and grandmother.
