Environments can shape a person's face and attitude. She's not actually being fierce or upset. She just appears to be. It's her default. The artist has had experiences, seen, and felt that, the kind of childhood responsibilities of citrus farming, digging ditches, spreading mulch. It's common in the faces of children in old photographs.
