Berkeley has been designing and creating jewelry professionally since 1975. He founded and ran Grimball Jewelers, a full-service custom jewelry store, from 1985 - 2018. A few years prior to closing the store he had the idea to incorporate grenadilla wood from unplayable clarinets into his pieces because the circle is the perfect shape and everything looks good in black.
Berkeley loves the black onyx look of the wood and the ability to make pieces with sculptural presence that are not heavy. All of his pieces now use wood from the clarinet bodies that he sculpts and polishes, as well as the metal keys, combined with sterling, gold and gemstones. What once made beautiful music, Berkeley transforms into beautiful wearable art.
