We the People: A Call for Art, a Call for Voices
Since March, visitors to the Gallery have been greeted by a striking display by artist and activist Shelly Steck-Reale. Shelly created her exhibition, And Still I Rise, to advance the discussion about Florida's recent book bans. Her themed art show has garnered media attention, with articles and segments appearing in newspapers, magazines, radio, and television. I had the pleasure of hosting Shelly on my podcast on RadioStPete.com, and at an artist talk in the Gallery. More significant than the media coverage, however, is the vital conversation it has sparked within the region's arts community.
We the People
I kept And Still I Rise in mind this week as the Gallery announced its first call for entries from artists. Our debut themed group art show is We the People, and aims to showcase artworks that represent what democracy looks like during a time when the political environment feels increasingly personal. Artists are invited to learn more and submit their applications by June 8th here. The exhibition opens on Independence Day, and we hope the show encourages thoughtful conversation and engagement. We look forward to experiencing the works and hearing the voices of artists during this period of shifting societal paradigms.
Benefits of themed art shows
Themed art shows like We the People offer numerous benefits for both the gallery and the participating artists. Some of these benefits include:
- Providing a platform to showcase diverse styles and mediums
- Attracting a broader and more varied audience
- Deepening the connection between visitors, the gallery, and the artists
- Highlighting emerging talent in the art community
- Raising awareness about important issues relevant to the gallery, the artists, and the audience
Auxiliary benefits include enhancing emotional and intellectual connections with the audience, making their gallery experience more engaging. Galleries then utilize their existing marketing channels to promote the themed shows, providing artists with valuable exposure without incurring extra costs. Finally, a themed art show enhances and amplifies individual expression from each artist.
Democratizing the arts
My background has shown me the value of mentoring emerging artists and sharing insights on the arts business. Themed art shows allow emerging artists of all ages to showcase their work alongside experienced creators, helping them gain valuable skills for their careers. After a career of traveling and participating in art shows, I can attest to the importance of these learning opportunities.
Whether you are an artist, an art lover, or an interested observer, we invite you to join us and let your voice be heard for We the People. The opening reception takes place at the Gallery on Friday, July 4th, and the show will run through August.
